24-hour Care
Round-the-clock support, matched to exactly how much you need.
24-Hour, Live-In & Overnight Care in Melbourne
- Ongoing support any time of the day or night
Not everyone needs the same level of care at home. Your situation is unique and we know one size doesn’t fit all.
Some people just need someone there overnight for peace of mind. Others want a consistent live-in carer who gets to know their routine. And some need a full 24 hour home care team providing active, hands-on support around the clock.
Absolute Care & Health arranges all three for older Australians and people living with disability alike. So whatever your situation, we can build the right level of care around you.
Which level of care do you need?
| Overnight Care | Live-in Care | 24-Hour / Round-the-Clock Care | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | One carer stays overnight for safety and support | A carer stays with you across multiple days in a row, sleeping in a private room and on call overnight | A rotating team of carers provides active, hands-on support across the full 24 hours |
| Best suited to | People who manage well during the day but want support or peace of mind overnight | People wanting consistent, familiar care without a full active-shift team | Higher or more complex care needs, where someone needs to be awake and actively supporting at all times |
| Carer availability | Present overnight only | On-call overnight, working blocks of a day or more at a time | Always awake and actively available — requires more than one worker per 24-hour period |

Overnight home care
In-home overnight care means a carer is with you or your loved one through the night whether that’s a sleep shift with support available if needed, or active overnight care, where the carer stays awake throughout for higher-need situations.
It’s often the first step people take when daytime independence is fine but nights have become a worry, whether that’s due to falls risk, confusion, or simply not wanting to be alone.
In-home overnight care for elderly clients can also work alongside daytime Support at Home hours or private day support, so you’re covered around the clock without paying for a full active team when you don’t need one.
We also arrange NDIS overnight care for participants who need overnight support built into their plan. Whatever form your home care overnight support needs to take, we’ll match it to the right level. Whether you need overnight care at home occasionally or overnight home care for the elderly on an ongoing basis, we’ll build a schedule that works for you.
Live-in care
With live-in care, you’ll have a small, consistent team of live-in carers who stay with you in your own home over the course of several days, rotating to ensure quality care without interruption.
Many clients manage comfortably with one live-in carer over a 24-hour period, with carers working a couple of days in a row, they sleep in a private room overnight and are on call if you need them.
It’s one of our most requested live-in home care services, and our live-in home care for seniors sometimes referred to as live-in home health care.
Live-in care for elderly clients, sometimes called elder live-in care suits people who want the reassurance of round-the-clock presence without the intensity (or cost) of a fully active care team. It means getting to know your carer well, rather than a large rotating roster, which is why live-in elderly care is often the preferred option for families wanting continuity above all else.
As a private live-in care provider, we don’t require a Support at Home or aged care assessment to get started. Our live-in care services in Melbourne, including live-in care for elderly clients at home, can begin as soon as you’re ready.
If your needs are higher and you’d prefer a full 24-hour live-in care service with an active team rather than block-based cover, that’s covered in the next section below.
24-Hour care at home
No matter how complex your care requirements are, we have qualified support workers, personal carers and nurses to provide a comprehensive range of 24 hour home care services, including 24-hour aged care at home for elderly clients and 24-hour disability care for NDIS participants.
Our 24-hour care aims to enhance independence and maximise quality of life with ongoing support any time of the day or night.
A 24/7 care programme requires a team of workers. We select highly experienced staff to support you and, depending on your needs, we may provide targeted training to our workers from our Complex Care Nurse.
If you require a lot of support overnight, or your support worker needs to be awake through the night for safety reasons, shifts are generally about 8–10 hours at a time, so you’ll have more than one worker across a 24-hour period, ensuring round-the-clock attention for those with higher care needs.
One of our dedicated Care Managers will oversee your programme and ensure the team is right for you.

How much does 24-hour, live-in or overnight care cost?
Cost depends on which level of care fits your situation. Overnight care, live-in care, and a fully active 24-hour team are priced differently, since they require different numbers of staff and different shift structures.
Rather than a single flat figure, we put together a clear, itemised quote once we understand what you need, so you know exactly what to expect before care begins.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs) about 24 hour care, live-in & overnight care
These are some of the most common questions, answered for you.
What is 24-hour care and how does it work?
24-hour care means a team of carers provides active, hands-on support across the full day and night. Because one person can’t safely work a 24-hour shift while staying alert, it requires a rotating team, typically working shifts of around 8–10 hours each. So there’s always someone awake and available to help.
What is live-in care?
Live-in care means a carer stays in your home across multiple days in a row, sleeping in a private room overnight and on call if you need them. It’s a lighter-touch alternative to a fully active 24-hour team, suited to people who want consistent, familiar support without needing someone awake and active all night.
What is overnight care and who is it for?
Overnight care means a carer is present through the night only, either on a sleep shift with support available if needed, or actively awake for higher-need situations. It suits people who manage well during the day but want extra safety and reassurance overnight.
What's the difference between overnight care, live-in care, and 24-hour care?
The difference comes down to how much of the day is covered and how active the carer needs to be. Overnight care covers the night only. Live-in care covers extended periods with a carer on call overnight. 24-hour care provides continuous, active support around the clock with a rotating team. Our Care Managers can help you work out which level fits your situation.
How much does 24-hour or live-in home care cost in Australia?
Cost varies depending on which level of care you need and how many staff it requires. Overnight, live-in, and fully active 24-hour care are priced differently. We provide a personalised, itemised quote once we understand your situation.
Can 24-hour or live-in care be funded through a Support at Home or NDIS?
Yes, in many cases. Depending on your approved funding level, 24-hour or live-in care can be funded partly or fully through a Support at Home or NDIS plan, or topped up privately where funded hours don’t cover everything you need. Talk to your Care Manager about what’s possible with your specific plan.
Do you provide 24-hour and overnight care for NDIS participants as well as aged care clients?
Yes. Our 24-hour, live-in, and overnight care services support both older Australians and people living with disability, including NDIS participants. Whether that’s active overnight care, live-in care, or a full 24-hour team depends on your individual needs and plan, and our Care Managers can talk you through what’s possible.
Is the carer awake all night during overnight or live-in care?
It depends on your needs. For lower-need situations, carers work a sleep shift and are on call if needed. For higher-need or safety-critical situations, we arrange an active overnight carer who stays awake throughout the night.
How quickly can 24-hour or live-in care start?
For private clients, care can often start within a week, and sooner in urgent situations such as a hospital discharge. Funded pathways depend on your assessment and plan status. Our team will guide you through what’s needed.
