Home Care Packages Explained

Understanding the process and what's included

What are Home Care Packages?

The Home Care Package programme is designed to help people continue living at home independently and safely. The goal is to provide the care and support you need in your own home so you can stay there comfortably.

When you receive a Home Care Package, the government allocates funds for your care which are paid to the service provider of your choice.

Consumer Directed Care

All service providers should plan your care around you and your lifestyle goals and preferences. This is called 'Consumer Directed Care' and it's central to everything we do.

How does it work?

To get access to a Home Care Package, you need to apply through the government's My Aged Care service, and they will organise a care assessment with the Aged Care Assessment Service (ACAS).

We can guide you through this process if you would like.

Eligibility

You need to have your eligibility assessed by the Aged Care Assessment Service and they will determine your package level.

Availability

There are a limited number of Home Care Packages available at any given time. Once you have been approved, there may still be a waiting list.

Your contribution

You may need to pay a part of your total funding amount, including a Basic Daily Fee (which we choose to waive) and an Income Tested Fee if your income is over a certain amount.

Choosing your provider

You can choose the care provider you want and change providers any time. It's important to consider your options and choose a provider you trust.

Fees

Providers can charge fees for administration and management of your Home Care Package. Make sure you understand and compare the fees each provider will charges to your package.

Levels of funding

There are four levels of funding for Home Care Packages which correspond to your care requirements. The approximate funding for each level is:

Funding level Care needs Approximate funding amount
Level 1 Basic care needs $8,000
Level 2 Low-level care needs $14,000
Level 3 Intermediate care needs $34,000
Level 4 High-level care needs $49,000

How do I know if I'm eligible?

You will need to have an independent assessment with the Aged Care Assessment Service. This is a government requirement and we cannot make the assessment ourselves. Find out more about your eligibility below.

Keep in mind:

  • Your unique circumstances will be considered
  • Older people who require support to stay at home may be eligible
  • Younger people with disabilities or special needs may be eligible
