How Absolute Care & Health Supported Sofia in Easing Her Burden While Preserving Her Independence and Quality of Life

Sofia* is an independent 94-year-old who has lived on her own since being widowed many years ago. She suffers from chronic back pain, Type 2 diabetes and incontinence. Despite that, she was determined to stay active in her daily routine and declined pre-packaged meals or too much help, wanting to keep her independence and for her dignity.

As Sofia’s health declined, she increasingly struggled to manage life on her own. Sofia needed support with tasks like changing bed sheets, tending her garden, and visiting her local bank and market—things she cherished as part of her everyday life. Her niece, who had been helping Sofia and her daughter (who has hearing impairments), became overwhelmed with her health issues.

This led Sofia’s family to engage Absolute Care & Health for in-home support to maintain Sofia’s independence while easing the strain on her family.

Language barriers made initial assessments challenging, as Sofia and her family primarily spoke Italian. However, our Care Manager (who is Registered Nurse) worked closely with them to create a personalised care plan, ensuring Sofia’s social and health care needs were fully addressed.

The plan focused on:

  • Compatible Staffing: Carers were carefully selected based on their ability to work with Sofia’s language barriers, respect her routines, and accommodate her preferences, like visiting the bank in person and allowing her to personally pick her groceries.
  • Consistent Routine: The carers supported Sofia weekly by taking her to the bank, assisting her with shopping, putting groceries away exactly as she liked, and hiring a gardener that listened to her gardening needs.
  • Empowering Independence: Tasks like meal preparation were deliberately excluded from the care plan, as Sofia insisted on doing her own cooking. Instead, carers focused on providing support where it was truly needed.

Since engaging Absolute Care & Health, Sofia’s quality of life has transformed. She can maintain her independence, feels supported, and enjoys a clean, comfortable home. Her family is grateful for the peace of mind professional care brings, knowing Sofia is treated with respect and dignity.

For Sofia, this care and support have brought relief, happiness, comfort, and renewed confidence in daily life.
